Meet our consultant clinical psychologist Toby Mbamalu

Toby Mbamalu is a licensed clinical psychologist with 19 years clinical experience in the treatment of patients with various psychiatric and mental health problems in Norway. He is the founder of Zest Psychological Consulting (Zest Psykologtjeneste), Oslo’s premiere consulting center for psychotherapeutic treatment of depression, angst, trauma, personality disorder, burnout and stress-related psychosomatic ailments.

In addition to his private practice, he also holds a full time position as a consultant clinical psychologist with Akershus University Hospital (Ahus), Oslo where he works in the outpatient psychiatric department (Allmennpoliklinikk, Groruddalen DPS, Akershus Universitetssykehus). The clinic serves an adult population with a broad ethnic diversity and a wide range of psychiatric problems. Before this, he worked as a psychologist at Telemark Sentral Hospital, Skien and as a senior advisor and school psychologist with Skien Commune School Administration (Skien PPT).

He has been appointed twice by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family Affairs (Barne- og familiendepartmentet) as an expert clinical psychologist to help in adjudication of cases relating to custody rights and children welfare in Telemark, Oslo and Akershus Court Districts. (Sakkyndigmedlem, Fylkesnemda for barnevern og sosiale saker, Telemarksfylke 2001- 2006, Oslo og Akershus, 2013 – 2016).

He is an “eclectic psychologist”, with a bias toward cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other empirically derived approaches. In general, he prefers to consider a set of techniques that may be helpful for a particular patient rather than to rigidly follow any specific school or approach. The focus is on short-term therapies using a wide range of psychotherapeutic methods.

Toby holds a Cand.Psychol degree in clinical psychology from University of Oslo, an M.Sc degree in Management from Norwegian School of Management (BI), and a B.Sc degree (First Class Honours, summa cum laud ) in psychology from University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He also holds a certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from Oxford University (Sept – Dec. 2013). Toby has served in Telemark local chapter of Norwegian Psychological Association as the Vice President (2000 – 2001), President of Telemark Immigrants Council (TIR).

Norway (TIR Norway, 2006), board member, Association for Intercultural Psychology Norway (Styremedlem, Forening for Interkulturell Psykologi, FIP, 2013-15), among others. He has been a member of Norwegian psychological Association since 1998 (Medlem, Norsk Psykologforening).
